I have an MF50 with an A3-152 diesel engine. I am getting ready to change the oil and at first thought, I'd use Castrol 10W-30. What are you folks using. I want a multi-viscosity oil due to the wide range of temperatures we have here, down to 10ish F and up to 95ish F through the year. Further, I noticed that the Castrol was rated API SL (if I recall correctly). I thought diesel engine oil had some type of 'C' rating.

Thanks!
Bill

I contacted Perkins England and was told to run a low ash low TBN API CC oil, in an engine that wouldn't see a lot of hard use, or I would loose oil control. API CC is obsolete. I re-contacted them and the reply stated that they would comment on this subject no further! I tracted down the OEM remanufacture of Perkins rebuilt engines in the USA. He told me that they had used Delvac 1300, but had had the oil control problem, they now use Delvac 1200 with good results. I tried to buy some but the product was just discontinued! The new oils have high ash and a high TBN to compensate for the new emission controls on over the highway use engines. The off highway oils are for high sulfer fuel. CAT warns that using a high TBN oil causes cylinder polishing with loss of oil control. I contacted most oil companies and was told that the old engines using the now mandated low sulfer fuels are in a no-mans land, and couldn't offer a truly proper oil. Good Luck,d3 MIKE Any comments would sure be welcome!

I use Castrol Agri MP Plus. 20W40. The good thing about this oil is it can be used in the whole trator.Engine, gearbox & hydraulic/rear diff. Good for rationalising your oil inventory. The again, if it gets that cold around your area you might need a different viscosity. Check with the major oil suppliers, they usually have a reference chart for applicable oils for different makes & models of tractors. As the other guys say, dont scrimp on the oil, it'll cost you in the long run. Plus always spend the extra on a new filter. No point in putting new oil through an old filter. Good luck & happy tractoring. 8^)

You should not use your gas engine rated oil in the diesel. Don't scrimp on the oil. It is the worse place to try to "save" money. The price of good oil is the cheapest money you will ever spend on your tractor, in the long run. In order of quality:
1. Mobil Delvac One 5W40 Full Synthetic
2. Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40
3. Shell Rotella 15W40
4. Chevron Delo 15W40
These are all rated for diesel engines. The Mobil Delvac One is only availabe at the larger truck stops like Petro or from the Mobil wholesaler (where I get mine).

Tom, My sentiments exactly. I use Shell Rotella-T, 15w-40 in my M/F50. All the diesel rated oils are pretty good but folks must remember to change it every once in a while. Where I am from the farmers ( not all of them) seem to have a very weak service schedule for their machinery. It seems to be the last thing on their minds. You tell me.

We use 15-40 in all our equipment , cars, trucks, tractors and combine. Don't scrimp on quality and as others say, change filters at the same time (we use 100hrs.) Our main tractor has had over 90 changes now and hasn't been wrenched yet.

Jim, As the old saying goes,"an once of prevention..... .". I am glad there are are folks out there like you who do not take their machinery for granted.
