Perkins Valve Clearance Question

First, thanks much for all of the replies to the rash of posts I have put up since acquiring my MF50!

I am going to have the fuel tank off of my tractor this week and while I have it off, I thought I might check the valve clearance. Or should I? How often is this check necessary or is it necessary? Without removing the valve cover, how does one know that service is needed?

Is this something a novice mechanic like me can handle?

Oh, the adjustment would be made on a "cold" vs "warm" engine.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

BTW, the engine is a Perkins A3-152.

Thanks!
Bill

If you understand the fact that the lifters must be on the low point of the cam lobe, then have at it . Intake and exaust are the same, .010"(hot),.012"(cold). Remove rubber plug from inspection hole in the left, front side bell housing plate. Rotate crank in normal direction untill TDC can be seen in the inspection hole and both rockers on 1 have some play. ADJ valves Nos. 1,2,3 and 5 valves (The loose ones) Then turn engine one more revolution (360 degrees) and Adj 4 and 6 Good Luck,Mike

The post below is correct. You NEED the manuals for your tractor. Get the REAL one from the dealer. Get all three: Operators Manual, Repair Manual, and the Parts Manual. The Parts Manual is essential since it gives ultimate detail in exploded views.

The shop manual for the A3-152 has a whole section on how to check valve clearance. You have to rotate the engine while observing the timing mark on the fly wheel. I suggest you try to find a shop manual and study that section.
