Yesterday I drove 550 miles to look at a 62 MF 35 delux with the 3 cyl perkins. I'm hoping one or you can help me make a decission about this tractor. Ser. no matches year. The tractor seems to run ok. Original owner was a real baling wire mech. Sheet metal and tires are good. Some extra hydrolic plumbing added for log splitter. What bothers me is I found a lot of oil on the outside of the engine. Looks like the valve cover is leaking and their looks to be oil comming from the front of the head between the head and the engine. There is also oil comming out from behind the starter, running down the block. The oil from the head and behind the starter bother me. My questions are:
1. If the head is craked can I get a replacement?
2. Whats behind the starter? Any plugs that could leak?
3. There does not appear to be a generator? It should be mounted on the right side up front, right?
4. Worst case, if I had to rebuild the engine what am I looking at for $ if I do all work myself?

Steve, I bought a 63 model 35 with the perkins for $2800 about 2 yrs ago and it needed a good bit of mechanical work on all the systems, clutch, brakes, steering etc. so I don't think you will get hurt @ $2100. The oil leak behind the starter is probably running down from a small oil feed line on the aft rt corner of the head, which you can tighten, but do it while you have the valve cover off so you can hold the stub that the line connects to. There are only 2 studs holding the valve cover on, no sweat changing the gasket. Also, NAPA carrys most of the gaskets/seals for the Perkins a3-152 diesel if you dont have a Dealer nearby. Last but not least, go to Big Deans website, he has a section on what to look for on Massey's as well as LOTS of other great info. Sorry for the long post, good luck!

Steve...bought my MF35 Deluxe with Perkins for $4250 last spring. Is partially restored, rubber excellent, ser. number indicates 1964. Hour meter showed about 5000 hours, but engine had been rebuilt at some point. One weld on left front steering arm, but no apparent problem form it. It was used in an orchard. Ony problem I found is hydrauloics leak some (won't stay up long) but that's apparently typical for MF.

I saw it and put a hold on it the day before the ad appeared in the classified tabloid, and before I left the owner's place he had anotehr buyer waiting in line.

Bottom line is, great tractor! Well worth the price...and I could sell it tomorrow at no loss, but won't. Based on other comments and from my experience, and the price, go for it.

I have a MF 35 diesel. It is one great tractor. Parts are available for it. Do a internet search for parts and you will find rebuild kits. Even assuming you have to rebuild the engine, it is still worth it as you know it was done right.

Hi Steeve

I begun to search for a 135 in my area in august
2001. Found one relatively in good order 100
miles away in september 2002. Bought the tractor
a 1970 135 gas paid $100.00 trucking.

Two days after my 135 was arrived... I saw
a newly repaint low hours all dressed 135 deluxe
on front of a house 3/4 miles from home for less
than I paid for mine. The tractor stays there 1 week and dissapears (sold).

Just my little story to say
if you are not in hurry.. a good 135 for sale may
appear in your area.

Good luck

Joe Ferguson

I paid $3700 for mine, overhauled the engine (Actually, my neighbor did) for about $400, including replacing a bent rod, and one ruined sleeve (ruined during first attempt to insert). Also, my generator didn't function. Of course the diesel doesn't need it to run, just to keep the battery charged. I replaced it with a one wire alternator. About $60 at an auto parts store. Based on Ricky in NC's comments if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, it sounds like a real good buy. It really is a nice tractor and runs forever on a tank of diesel fuel.

I recently finished rebuilding a 1961 MF-35 diesel A3-152 three cylilnder diesel. You should check with a MF dealer about head availability. I had no trouble getting any parts from my MF dealer. Engine rebuild kit is about $430 or so. I spent another $425 having the crank turned, block acid cleaned, slieves changed and block re-assembled. Your questions:
If the head is craked can I get a replacement?...Check with a MF dealer...
2. Whats behind the starter? Any plugs that could leak?...I think oil may be coming down from rear cam shaft oil sea, tachometer cable connects there...Thats an easy fix....There are a couple external copper oil lines on that side also. You should clean it and find the source....
3. There does not appear to be a generator? It should be mounted on the right side up front, right?....Mine has been changed to an alternator mounted on the right side front where the generator use to be...One fan belt pulls the alternator and water pump...
4. Worst case, if I had to rebuild the engine what am I looking at for $ if I do all work myself? Rebuild cost me about $1000.00 it could be more or less depending on how much machine shop work is done. I changed the clutch also...The new clutch assembly was about $330...Just new pressure plates would be much cheaper.
...It is a good tractor and well worth it. Oil leaks on the front may be coming from the breather pipe on the front of the valve cover that points forward and down. Timing gear cover on the front could also have some leaks...Need to clean it and find the leaks. I have various pictures e-mail me if you want to see them.

Thanks for you info. There does not appear to be any generator or alternator. If I could get this unit for $2100 does it sound like a good deal? It has new tires, adjustable rear wheels, wheel weights front and rear and an old field mower.
