Can someone please explain the difference between a 44 and a 44 Special. Its my understanding that both were made in 1953 thru 1955 so it wasn't like they made a clean change between models-is this correct?
Thanks
Bud

The 44 special also has a longer front u-frame.It uses heavy cast hubs and different front rims.It also has a different seat mounting assembly. The upper section of the steering is also changed. It has a bigger feul tank. The engine is a continental built 277 cubic inch engine. All continental did was put in 4-inch pistons instead of the 3-7/8 pistons. The block is the same. The front tires are 7.50/16 istead of 6.00/16.

Yes both versions were produced during those years. As I understand it, the feature that was only available on the Special and not the 44 was the new Follow Up Hydraulic system. It added depth control to the three point hitch. Also while the 44 could be ordered with Live Power PTO and and the accompanying disc brakes, they were standard features on the Special. The 44 maintained use of the 260 ci. Continental while the Special got the bigger 277 that was continued into the 444 series. However the 277 was only available in the gasoline version. While the Diesel, Distillate and LP models used the 260 engine. Live hydraulic power was also standard equipment on the Special. The 444 added the 10 speed transmission behind the 277 engine and the three point hitch system was beefed up. The 277 ci engine was made available for all the fuel options at this time also. Hope this helps some.
I would be interested in hearing about any tractors that have been found with variations on these options.

This may seem like a strange question but I have a 44 Special with a 277 ci engine.I have a parts manual for the engine but not a service manual. I would like to know how much oil the engine takes with a filter. (no original dip stick) Is it 2 gallons or 1.5 gallons?
Thanks.

Thanks
I have been considering the purchase of a 44 and the value guides have the "special" priced considerably above the base 44. Now I understand why.
