Multi-Power Question

Aside from the lever on the dash, externally what would multipowered tractor look like visually different from a non-multipowered tractor? Are there external parts that one can point to so as to identify the machine as multipower?

Also, can the multipower deal be removed completely from the tractor such that one would not know the difference?

I ask this, given the thread of what does the "W" on the three digits on the serial number plate mean. My MF50 s/n starts with SNW, but I have no multi-power and aside from a slot in the dash where a MP lever might go, there is no evidence MP was ever on my tractor. So either it did not come with it, it was removed or my tractor was put together from other old machines.

Thanks!
Bill

I wonder about welding them together, atleast on our Massey 1085 sometimes you can't get it out of gear unless it is in Low, maybe I have another problem, hope not.

Bill, The slot in the dash of my 165 is just there "in case" it has never had Multi Power. But came from the factory with the slot, but no MP decal. I would say if the decal were there it once had MP. The 180 we have has MP and it is all internal, only the lever, and linkages are external. There is a rod with a boot on it on the top of transmission. This rod is linked to the lever in the dash. Multi power is a great feature when it works. I did not know that MP was around when the 50's were built, but have never really looked a 50 over that close. Don't lose any sleep over the empty slot in your dash, slap a MF decal over it. I don't know about w thread, something to do with MP? Good Luck.

My friend Pete has a massy 1085 it had multipower. He has a elderly gent that works on the farm plus teenagers,. When the multipower got weak he took it out. The local massy dealer told him how to lock it in low. But Pete dosen't use this Tractor for heavy tillage and he does use it for hauling loads so high was more importaint. He took part of the multipower clutch out and and welded the clutch together on the high side. It has been that way for 8 or 9 years with no problem. If anyone is interested I could have Pete explain it to you guys on the forum.

I would like to hear how he did it. Is the hill hold feature disabled also(jaw clutch)?

Tom,

I have driven this tractor just enough for a brief test drive and to unload it and motor around the yard and park it - where we have, as weather and time permits, it has set while we go over it replacing fluids, filters, etc. But when I did drive it, there were many hills and the machine did not free wheel going down. That is why this multipower deal is a mystery. This thing will be ready to go in about another month and I'll know then!

Thanks,
Bill

MP is great when it works , but stay out of low going downhill , you cannot believe how fast you can freewheel. If it doesn't leak , it is well worth using , but can be expensive(what isn't these days?) and frustrating to repair . I have had numerous Masseys , from 35's to 1085's , some with it , some without , compared to the old 6 gear models , it is great , less so compared to an 8 spd . My 2 cents worth---Bill

Bill I had the same experiance with my 135 , it had the slot on the dash so I started looking around under the dash, on top of the bell housing
there was a plunger type rod with nothing connected to it, I found the control lever at a tractor junk yard and ordered the linkage rod from our local massey dealer.
I was told the multi power on some of these tractors was diconnected because when in low range, there is no engine braking making it unsafe, hope that helps good luck.

Jack, I will have a look see. Are you using your multipower now? If so how do you like it?

Thanks!
Bill

I use it all the time , real handy when pushing snow around, make sure you got good brakes and stay in high range when you are going down hill headed for the barn,(won't do that again) Find BIG DEAN'S web page lots of information there, let us know how you make out.
