I have a diesel 245 that smokes a little when cold, has a knock and it seems that there's a skip. I checked my injector pump timing marks and the the pump is rotated clockwise about an eighth of an inch. I moved the pump back to where the marks align and its worse.
My question is, if I have a bad injector , can mistiming the pump improve performance?
Does anyone have a different idea?

Thanks. Charlie

Pull out your oil dipstick about an inch or so.
If you have postive pressure or oil spurts out
that means broken ring. I have just gone thru
the same thing as you have.

Checked for pressure in crankcase and didn't find any at all. Thinking of pulling the injectors and sending them for service. When I do I'll check compression. It's got to warm up a little first.
Any other ideas?

I have a MF-245 with similar conditions. I asked the same question in this forum several years ago when I was considering purchase. Was advised the best explanation was either fuel advance detonation due to an anti-gel additive or piston slap. I got the oil analyzed and saw no aluminum, so ruled out piston slap. There is no blow-by or positive crankcase pressure, so rings appear OK. Condition is definitely worse during winter cold weather starts, then goes away after warm-up.

My conclusion was harmless combustion knock. Has performed flawlessly for many hundreds of hours since. Hope this helps.

I stopped by my Massey dealer yesterday to pick up a few little things. I told him about it and that I intended to pull the injectors and let them clean and repair them. He told me to try this conditioner that AGCO puts out that's supposed to clean them real well. He's an honest guy. I hope it works, 5 bucks beats 60.

Remove the Lucas Thermostart cold start aid from the inlet manifold if you have one,see if the knock dissapears-these are prone to leaking fuel into the inlet manifold and causing a knock.
