I have a 1985 massey 240, when it is cold outside (below 40*) the tractor will not start. It will just barely turn the motor over. I have a good battery with 1000 cranking amps, and when I turn the key over it pulls the battery down to about 6 volts. I have even tried jumping the tractor with my truck and get the same results. It will just barely turn over two or three times. I have checked all the wires and cleaned all the connections with the same results. I realize that A diesel is hard to start in winter but I can't even get the tractor to turn over. any ideas on where to start?

There could be a brake in the rear end of the starter so the starter cant turn after you release the key. In cold weather it can get the starter stuck or hard to turn. If it is the brake just remove it.

I agree...somethings wrong with your starter. Have you thought about putting a block heater on the motor for the winter time starts? Lynch

I'm no expert, but it most likely seems to me that a shorted-out starter motor is the likely cause. If the voltage is dropping that much on a good battery then it's pulling out a lot of amps!

A siezed engine could put that much strain on a starter, but my guess is that it's a defective starter.

it sure sounds like a bad starter
