I'm looking for my first tractor to maintain our beach and driveway. The first tractor I looked at was a green one. After checking with the guys on the JD pages I learned that the 2010 is not well liked. I'm now considering a MF 50 with a 3 cyl diesel. I don't want to get stuck with the ugly step-child of Massey Ferguson. How does this tractor rate by MF fans? Is it easy to work on and get parts for? The JD complained about engine design of the 2010 among other things. Thanks!

The MF50 is great little tractor we use to have and now have MF35 Deluxe just about the same tractor. The MF50 we had had some problems with the hyd. steering (leaks) and condention in the oil for the hyd. system and would cause slow operation in the cold. The MF has the same problem with the condention in hyd. system.

Chris, I wished you were a littler earlier. A MF65 just sold last month for 2500.00 dollars. The only thing that was wrong with it was it needed a new water pump. Day late and a dollar short huh.

I agree with the other postings. Good tractor. I bought a gas 1961 MF50 a few months ago, did a good bit of engine work on it. Found that the local MF dealer has a surprising number of parts for it at mostly reasonable prices. Four or five pages back in this discussion board I listed prices on several MF50's for sale around here (Okla.) and your price seems reasonable if everything works. As I understand it, they are much the same as an MF35.

Chris, One thing a M/F 50 is not is a ugly step child. The three cylinder Perkins is a very good engine. As far as getting parts is concerned, I am at a loss for a comment because I have not had to do anything but routine maintanence on mine for the last 10 years, which is how long I have owned it..

Scott,
Thanks for the input. I'm hearing good things about the MF 50. I am going to get the serial number and do some more research. Thanks again!
Chris

I bought a 1962 MF50 diesel, 3 cyl perkins recently. The only part I had trouble with was getting a radiator. I found one, but I had to have the top nipple moved a bit so it would fit. Aside from the sheet metal and front steering (someone correct me if I am wrong) I think they are pretty much the same as a MF35 diesel.

I might add that thus far, it has been very easy to work on.

Good luck,
Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the comments. I'm gonna take a closer look at this one and take it for a drive. Does $4000 sound fair for a MF 50 with a loader? I'm told everything works, but it does show it's age.
Chris
