Are these engines known to suffer from cracked block/cylinder heads? Perkins agent seems to thinks so but I'd always though of them as bulletproof. Suggestion is that they may crack between stud holes and cylinder walls as there in very little metal thickness in that area. Result is repeatedly blowing cylinder head gaskets and pressurised coolant. Anyone have experience of this fault? Or are we just unlucky as we've certainly got it. Perkins guy says there's a new type of gasket and revised torquing proceedure to try to combat it but old block is scrap.

I have another post on this on another forum but it hasn't drawn any response so I thought I'd try the Massey guys - apologies for the cross posting.

David in the 27 years I was a Massey Ferguson & no telling how many of those engines I have rebuilt through those years I only saw that one time. I always thought it was caused by the head bolts being torqued to tight. They were very hard to get broke loose. The only other cracks I have seen in them was from freezing & busting in the cylinder walls around the Sleeves. That is not to say the Perkins guy was wrong just that I have not experienced it.

Thanks, you confirm what I always thought. We have a JCB 406 with the industrial version engine D3.152 (you might remember sending me info on the sleeve puller a week or two ago which was in connection with this job.) So far it has cracked one block lengthways along both sides of the crackcase and this (JCB reconditioned one) has blown head gaskets repeatedly since it was fitted, despite a head skim. Sometimes they last 2 weeks and sometimes 2 years. At the moment its running but is now pressurising the coolant. I know it has a crack starting at the top flange of at least two sleeves and also has a stud hole crack. Every time I've done the gasket I've torqued head to 75lbft but dealer also has had a try at it too time before last so who knows what they did. Overtightening is what Perkins guy said is a cause, but maybe not the only one. I think I'll be opening it up this weekend so maybe that will reveal all. Perhaps its industrial version "D" rather than "A" versions that does it. I also think I might check out my torque wrench too!

David what I always done when I had one that kept blowing the head was paint the head gasket with aluminum paint the kind like they use to paint pipe fences with. The brush on not the stuff in the spray can. Put a heavy coat on & install the head & torque it while the paint is still wet let it set over night before you start it. I have cured a lot of head gasket problems like this.

Thanks a lot for that tip Dean. I'll probably try it as "official" advice from Perkins is a £1800 new "long" engine which isn't appealing. For £18 and another try at the gasket its got to be worth a go. Probably won't be doing it this weekend after all as hasn't got any worse and other things are pressing. I'll let you knwo what we eventually find inside.
