Hi gang,

I am newbie to the tractor scene. I am looking to
buy a MH 44 or similar with a loader, 3 pt hitch
and PTO.

Couple of questions...

what is a live PTO?
what is meant by double clutch?

any points to consider when looking at these
old beauties would be appreciated.

I am basically looking to haul the odd log out
of the bush, spread the odd bucket of soil and
gravel, etc. No tilling though

Bruce: Most times the two terms go together. A live PTO means you can stop the forward motion of the tractor while the PTO remains at full speed. Very important with balers, forage harvesters, pto combines, snowblowers, etc. A double clutch as seen on the like of an MF 35 or newer means you shove the clutch halfway down and the tractor stops, with the pto still running. Shove the clutch all the way down and everything stops. An independent pto means you can engage the pto without touching the foot clutch. It has its own clutching system built in either mechanical, hydraulic, electric over hydraulic, etc. MH 44 are great tractors in the field but I would respectfully suggest you check out other models as well. 44' are heavy, high tractors, the power steering on them is not great compared to newer models and the 3 pt is slow and strictly up and down, no draft control. The live pto system they had also ensures you will run out of hands and feet needed to operate. See if you can grab a session on a 35 or a 65 t
