Problem with position control

The position control on my 148 which was a little stiff, now no longer works. I can still raise and lower the lift arms with Draft control but moving the position control has no effect. Also I can hear the occasional knocking which suggests the position control thinks it is in or about constant pumping. If it is in constant pumping mode could the lift still be raised / lowered by Draft control ? If it is stuck in constant pumping can this damage the pump and does this sound like a problem whose solution will necessitate the removal of the lift cover ?

Any suggestions appreciated

I know a little about these systems since I pulled a MF 35 out of the weeds at the back of a friends ranch. That was six months ago. The MF 35 and I have become intimate friends and my friend is happy that the tractor is out of its two year retirement. The position control and draft control levers both act on the same roller that is linked to the control valve on the hydraulic pump. If the draft control lever operates the lift arms normally under a load and the position control lever does not, your most likely problem is just that you need to adjust the position control linkage. Since you indicated that the position control had been a "little stiff" you may have bent or broken part of the linkage. On the 35 you can remove the hyd inspection cover plate on the right side (with the hyd/trans dipstick) and observe the control levers in action. Best thing to do is get the shop manual and follow the procedures for adjusting the levers. If you take off the hydraulic cover, be warned, it is heavy. Also try the website; tractorsmart.com. It has great detailed information on the ferguson 3 pt hyd system and supporting graphics. Good luck, Jim
