Does the 255 have any problems to watch for when buying?

You will not go wrong wrong with the 255 as long as it has been taken care of. Mine is suppose to be a 1976 year tractor according to where I bought it with about 1700 hours. It has the A4-236 motor, 8-speed transmission, and two sets of hydraulics. This tractor has been trouble free since the 3 years that I have owned it. The only downside that I can think of is that it could use a heavier front axle epecially if you were going to add a loader.

I have a 1976 255 with a 203 engine. Some say the earlier units had some vibration problems but to me tractors tend to shake and vibrate anyway. We purchased this tractor new and it may have 1900 hours mostly by friends and neighors using it. It is a dream with a bush hog. I have a 6 foot 3 pth Ford and it does a good job. It is excellant with a double 3pth hay rake. It will turn on a dime. I've had no engine trouble but I did replace a fuel pump because I didn't change filters timely and my fuel froze and busted the pump. $500 repair for a $8 part. Talk about an expensive lesson. Mine has Mult-power and I've never had any trouble with that. Always run in hi-Multi-power and down shifted in a tight. Never operate in low MP but operate in Hi Mp and when you get in a tight, shift to low and after you get through that go back to high. If the one you are looking at has mult-power you cannot tow or roll to crank. I think they are great tractors. Mine is a row crop model so I put an extra step on it several years ago and that was money well spent. I have a block heater on my diesel and we feed hay with it so we keep the battery charged and plug in the heater about and hour before we crank and it cranks like its hot summer. Good shifting pattern depending on what your doing.
Good all around tractor in my book. Perkins parts are available in my area. If MF are in your area it would make you a good tractor.
If you have any questions e-mail or put on this site and I'll see if I can help.

I have a 75 255 with the 203 diesel that I bought 2 years ago from my neighbor right after he rebuilt the engine. I had borrowed it frequently over the years and knew it well. I mostly use it for mowing, putting out round bales, moving equipment around, plowing, shaping, and other general utility usages. The only problem that I have had in the 2 years is a broken upper steering knuckle. I have been having problems lifting some of the round bales but have figured out that it is caused by bales that weigh more than the hydraulics are designed to lift. I don't need to use a block heater because winters are not terribly cold here--it starts every time when I first turn it over.

One caution: if the tractor needs to be started with starting fluid, you should look elsewhere or plan on a rebuild job soon after you get it. Big Dean has some other tips on his website (see below).

Forgot to add: Mine is the standard 8-speed tranny. Also might want to look for factory auxiliary hydraulics. If the tractor doesn't have it, it's a pain to do and can be quite expensive.
