Al, Moye has pretty well got you covered on this one, but let me see if I can make it a little clearer for you. There are three sliding shafts underneath your gearshift (inside of transmission). Take the oil fill cap off of the transmission and look inside. There are three sliding rods in there that you can see. To the far right is hi/lo one, middle is low/rev and left is 2nd/3rd. Push in clutch with right knee and slide middle shifting fork to neutral position. If it is stubborn, rock the tractor gently with right shoulder as you're trying to slide shifter. After studying the components for a moment, you can see what takes place as you shift gears. If not, shift gears as you're looking and that'll give you the picture. My method to keep this from happening again is to be a little gentler when you shift gears. If that don't help, you'll have to build up the ball on the end of the shifter with a little weld. Who knows, that may be a perfectly good tractor and the last owner was stymied with this and you got a bargain.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on this problem. Check the archives and you will find plenty of these problems. As said previously, it is easy to correct. The main reason it happens to someone is they are either in a big hurry changing gears or they lift up on the gear lever when shifting. Take your time, shift slowly and do not "pick up" on the shift lever and this will probably never happen again. I know that is what happened to me. And no, you did not pay too much. Moye

First relax this is quite common after the slots get worn you can remove the top of trans cover or if you have a filler hole there on top remove that and use a flat screw driver to move shifter out of stuck gear usually first reverse is the one. I built up the shifter ball on mine and it has not stuck again so far. Mean while you can visit or join up below lots of knowledge there.
