We quit farming about the time the 2 series tractors came out so I never really learned a lot about them. I have a neighbor who has a 285 that he and his father bought new and used till they also quit. I have passed the tractor at least once a week sitting back in his equipment shed for the last few years and just decided that I would stop and ask if it might be for sale. He told me that yes he would sell it but he would have to find out how much to ask. The tractor he thinks has less than 2,000 hours on it(we haven't looked at it yet). and I'd say he is right because I remember how long they used it before they quit. The tractor has been sitting for at least 2 years without being started and he says the frontend is a little loose and might need a rebuild. Now my questions are, why would the front end be loose with this many hours? It wasn't a loader tractor. How expensive is this to take care of and are the parts available? Last but not least what would it be worth? They are the type of people who took care of the equipment they had and it has always been shedded. The front end and the fact that it has been sitting so long is probably the 2 major concerns. Thanks in advance.

What Don said... Also check the two power steering cylinders under the front, some have non-replaceable ball joint ends, that may be where the looseness comes from. I'm not sure, but there may have been more than one set-up for the steering. Those cylinders are EXPENSIVE! That being said, it's still a great tractor.

Now that ya mention it, had both of mine rebuilt. the one end is not replaceable, but the other end threads into the piston. the ball joint ended up unthreading itself and wrecking the threads, so the piston had to be replaced. Even the rebuild is expensive, about $5-$700 for labor and all. Mine is also fairly loose underneath, probably could use new bushings underneath also. (have a large concrete block on the front between 2 suitcase weights. weighs a few hundred pounds.) I replaced the outer tie rods but not the inside. Also had to replace the pump, and thats when I really noticed how loose it was. Aint much I feel like fixing, because I dont have money to fix something unless it's BROKE, and broke good.

The 285 is the most common tractor in my area of NE Wisconsin. If in great condition, should be able to bring in top dollar. I would say somewhere from 5-7,000 in prime condition, a little less if abused, but it doesn't soun like it. Our Dealer stocks just about everything for this tractor, and are very quick to fix it if out of commision. (doesn't happen too often though)
