My tractor has been sitting for 5 months in a garage in northern michigan. It's been really cold for a long time...I put some fuel treatment, anti-jel additive in the fuel tank before I parked it...let it run for 30 minutes before I shut it off...took the battery out and stored it correctly in a warm area and re-charged it. If I put a good battery in it, should it resart o.k.? Do I need either/starting fluid? I should have bought a gas tractor...as this diesel engine terrifies me...as I don't know enough about it. Short of praying a little...do I need to know anything else? Oh...by the way...This tractor is bad to the bone...I love it!!! I just wish I knew a little more about the engine. Thanks!!!

One thing you should do if it's been sitting that long is pull the fuel shutoff out and crank the engine to get some oil up there. Then push it in and start it.

I have a 1969 135 w/ the perkins diesel. At -20F when the starter disconect switch in the transmition is frozen so that the key wont work we just jump the solenoid with a screwdriver and it starts right up better than most cars with gas engines on a day only half as cold.

It will probly start.

Gas engine? Who'd have one? In UK diesel is absolutely standard and you'd be hard put to find a petrol tractor. Diesels are simple, reliable, start easily and pull from cold with no trouble. In the UK it doesn't get as cold as parts of the USA but we have a 135 that has always started first try even down to -18C without heater plug or ether. In fact the heater plug has never been used and tractor is 1965. Perkins engine that's in 135 is a good one. Good luck with it.

I will repeat what has been said many times on this site. "No ether". You could easily damage the rings/pistons, then you will be looking at a rebuild. C. T.

Great tractor. The only suggestion I have is to
change your fuel filter before you put it up for the winter. If there is any water in the filter and sed bowl that should clear it out. I would say check the fluids, install battery and it should crank.
Good luck.

While it doesn't get near as cold here, my 135 diesel started great all winter. This is my first diesel, and I had the same fear you have. I have found that a diesel is really much simpler than gas. No points, plugs, distributor, or ingition timing. I would just install the battery and crank it.

Anyone who thinks a deisel is simpler than a gas engine knows nothing about either and is smoking crack. If it has breasts or injectors, it's eventually going to cause trouble and cost you money.
