I am in the process of restoring a 1947 Massey Harris 30 Standard. I recently read that the engine color of the 1947 model 30 had a black engine, they then switched to a red engine from 1948-52. My 30 seems to have a red engine. Can anyone confirm the engine colors.

Interesting comment below about black engines in 1947. In my opinion, I don't think too many of us are doing a restoration that warrants being perfect about things like the engine color. I've got a couple of 101 Juniors (neither one is 100% correct original) and one has a grey engine (it was sort of a beige color when I got it) and the other I painted red. Both look pretty good and nobody has ever asked about either one. Personally, I think the red one looks a bit better.

I painted a 101 Jr last year and the engine got the red paint the same as the rest of the tractor. They just look cleaner and nicer that way. Always a little undecided about the starter and generator but the usually get the red paint.

In the 1947 44-6 the engine was black but after that year they were red. I think the Cont egines in the 101 Jr's and the Sr's were black. I don't know about the 30, sorry.

As the one hundredth anniversary of Massey-Harris,
1847-1947, the '47 engines were suppose to be black that year, 1947. It seems very many were,
but mistakes happen. Any MH you've seen over the
years might have red, silver, black, grey, bronze engines. Dealers & Repair shops repainting used
tractors, decades ago, were not doing authentic
restoration of old iron, as attempted today. New
coat of red for the whole tractor, yellow rims.
Decals were ignored half the time, due to price,
botched application on slide-offs. If you can chip
the red, your 30 engine was probably once, black.

Check with, Wild Harvest, Massey Collector's News,
P.O.Box 529, Denver, Iowa 50622, phone 319-984-5292. I can not find anything that indicates there was a black engine on Massey Harris tractors.
