MF35 Diesel, Electrical Problem

I have a MF35 Deluxe, Perkins diesel. Last Friday, it was running fine. Sunday afternoon, it wouldn't start. Dead as can be...no clicking of solenoid or anything indicating it was getting any juice at all. I had cleaned battery terminals and connectors just a week or so ago, but did it again - nothing! I tried jumping, but still nothing. Looks like a disconnect someplace. I will be checking continuity as best I can, and also try bypassing the neutral gear shift interlock switch since I know where it is.

Can anybody tell me where the shutdown fuel switch starter interlock switch is? I've looked briefly, but don't se anything yet that looks like a switch. The service manual doesn't say a thing about electrical as far as I can tell, and the parts manual does better, but I haven't found it yet.

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thanks!
Chuck

Chuck, I've a 35MF Deluxe w/Perkins diesel also. There's nothing electrical connected to the fuel shut-off rod, just kills the fuel injector pump's ability to squirt fuel. Sounds like most of the 'good' suggestions have been suggested. I didn't notice one though.. when you have the jumper cables attached, momentarily short the small post on the starter solenoid to the big post with a screwdriver. If the starter is good (and you don't have a broken wire from the battery to the solenoid) the engine should turn over. This method bypasses all safety conditions.. MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS IN NEUTRAL.

Just so you don't overlook the obvious, make sure the Hi/Low range shifter is in neutral. Just putting the 1/2/3/R gear shifter in neutral won't do it.

Good Luck.

Sam...Yup! Absolutely sure on that one - always do the Hi/Lo range in neutral. Thanks! Never hurts to remind of the obvious.

Hey Chuck,

As far as I know, You got battery positive to the key, then it goes to the neutral safty switch and then to the starter solinoid.

Test that path, I think that's the way it is on all small Massey diesels.

I've had connection problems at the neutral switch and heard of others on this forum as well.

Good hunting.

CH...thanks! That helps. I'll be checking it all out tomorrow night, so won't be back with news - good or bad - till the weekend.

Shutdown fuel switch starter interlock switch? My tractor must be missing something. All I've got is a fuel shutdown rod on the bottom left of the dash. There's nothing attached, and doesn't look like it ever did have anything attached. I would check the battery, and disconnect every electrical item except the starter, then see if it starts. Then work back checking the rest of the wiring to find the fault. Mine used to draw down without a visible reason, and I ran everything except the start circuit through the oil pressure switch on the back of the oil pressure gauge. This way nothing is energized until oil pressure is present. This has been helpful since the tractor occasionally sits for long periods, and even if someone plays with it, they can't drain the battery by leaving a switch on. (lights, etc.) I also run a one wire alternator, and that was a good investment. Good Luck

Chip...thanks for your reply.

As far as I can tell, with the fuel shutoff rod pulled out, with the gear range selector in neutral, turning the key does nothing - no juice to the starter circuit. This suggests there is an electrical interlock associated with the fuel shutoff rod. Maybe not, but sure liiks like it. Like you, I see nothing of the sort - that's why I asked. :)

As far as anything else draining down the battery, neither the headlights nor tail lights are connected, so leaving the lights on is not a possibility. Gauges might be a possibility, and I will check on those. My fuel gauge originally worked, but quit not long after I bought the tractor last year.

As I said in my original post, I jumped the battery from a good and running truck, with still no sign of any juice flowing to the starting circuit. That suggests to me that it's not necessarily the battery since I'd have expected something if the circuit was OK except for the battery - even if just a grunt.

I'll be chasing down the wiring tonight and will try disconnecting everything but what I know has to do with the starter.

Thanks again!
Chuck
