The shifter or transmission is stuck in second gear. Is there an easy way to resolve this without taking the transmission apart?

I was using my brush cutter (running about 20min.) and when I went to back up I discovered that the shifter would not move. It was in second gear and runs fine, but only forward. the high/low shifter works fine. Can some advise me?

Big Dean gave me the advice that when shifting use only the palm or your hand. This way you don't lift up on the shifter. Since I started doing this, my 135 has never stuck in gear.

CH has correct advice. I have a 150 and 165, have had the same problem with both of them. Just have to take your time shifting.

The other information that I've sen posted along with the fix is the cause. I've read - probably a previous comment of Big Dean's - that this typically occurs when you don't allow the gears to come to a stop before shifting. Since I read that, I've been a little less sloppy in shifting and haven't stuck it in a long time. Mine's a MF35.

Along with what kind of oil to use, I'd guess the stuck in gear question must be one of the most frequently asked questions here on the MF board.

Hey Bob,

Open the trany oil fill plug next to the shifter. Stick a big screwdriver in there and move the big gear back. You can feel when it hits neutral. Make sure your HI LO shifter is in neutral.

Thank Big Dean for this info.

It's good advice. I have a 35 and they are prone to this sometimes as well.

My TO35 locks in reverse. The advice is sound. I use a crowbar. Just slide the big gear back until the shift lever frees up. I've been told that the cause is some type of wear in the shifter.

My 135 does the same thing and seems to be getting worse...so...anybody know the cause of it sticking in gear and better yet the fix. Except for the sticking trans I dont think I've ever had a better tractor. I can usually get it unstcuk by slapping the shifter or just shut it down and let her sit for a few minutes.
