theres a square hole where the bracket that pulls the brake on ... theres a hole on the plate .. use the screw driver and to adjust the brake .. i think its clockwise that will make the brakes feel tigher... you do not need to take it off unless the seal is leaking gear oil or brake pads are worn out... you should see the little square hole , take a flashlight and you can see the teeth with bolt between the brake pads , thats how you adjust it.. hope it turns easy... hope that ll help shannon

Haven't done this for years but isn't there a double nutted bolt sticking out the front of the brake drum. If there is not much adjustment left you probably need new brake shoes. If you have someone in the auto parts business you might be able to find automotive brake shoes for a reasonable price.
Changed a clutch in a 101 Jr years ago and found out it was the same clutch as a 1950's Ford car for about 1/3 of what the Massey dealer wanted.

In 2003, we don't know what brakes you have on the
44, three styles, right Marlowe? Early models had
band brakes('46-'49),in '50, Bendix shoe brakes
were on most 44 & 30 models, except the live PTO
models, which had double disc brakes(the best).
I though all 44's in 1950, had Bendix, but a book
states 'option',maybe. Disc are simple adjust, since, the double nut, as listed above. Determine
your brakes, probably Bendix,by a 5/16" steel coil
return spring, or Band:baler wire coil spring,4"?
A truck brake shop can match the Bendix shoes, the
drums may be a used 'find item'.The band perform
poorly on 44's, get hot expand:no brakes. Better
to replace with Bendix set-up,all fits.Good luck.
Questions, post back.
