About a year ago I posted a message about my dad's tractor. Here is the message I posted for him:

"I was bush-hogging my land a few days ago when my MH 50 just up and died on me. It was running only about an hour before dying on me. At first I thought it had ran out of gas. After checking the tank, I realized this was not the problem. I checked the plugs but they also did not seem to be the problem. I actually burned my starter up trying to get it to fire back up. After rebuilding my starter, I'm still having the same problem. It puzzles me considering I've never had a problem out of her before. It just sounds like it doesn't want to fire. And when it does sound like it wants to fire, it doesn't want to take the gas. Could it have jumped timing? I'm also having the carb. rebuilt just to be on the safe side, but it was running to smoothly to just die the way it did. Any advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. "

It's been a year and this tractor is still giving him problems. I will be visiting him in about a month from overseas and would love to help him resolve the issues he is having. He just told me that he set the timing and the tractor ran fine all day long. The next day he wanted to work with it again, and it would not crank up. He said it sounded as if it would not take the gas. He would get it to fire up every now and again, but once he tried putting it in gear or giving it the gas, it would stall out. Leaving him puzzled again. He has rebuilt the starter, carb, and now reset the timing and still it will not run. Any advise anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had a similar problem with an Oliver 1650 gas that just wouldn't fire up. Finally changed the distributor cap and it ran fine. Apparently it had a crack that was shorting the spark. This is an easy fix in case you haven't already tried it.

Here are three things I have found to cause the problem you are talking about:dist.cap,rotor,condensor.The cap I found that the carbon brush in the coil tower was bad and did not have continuity. The rotor burnt a pin hole thru the tab that makes contact with the coil tower brush. The condensor went bad, don't really know what happened inside of it,replaced it and the tractor ran fine. These I have seen in 25+years of working on farm tractors in my shop.

Brian,if the tractor has the orginal sediment bowl it has a "Stack Filter" that extends into the tank. Be sure that you have good fuel flow to the carb, if not screw out the sediment bowl fitting(Drainig the tank) and blow out the filter and ensure the passages thru the shut off valve are clean. This happens every few years on our old Masseys. Good Luck.

it sounds like poor fuel flow to the carb. line pluged some thing in tank the will cut the flow water in sedament bole. pull line at carb and see what the flow is use some air to blow the line out

Sounds just like a problem I had several years ago. It ended up being the ignition coil. When it got hot... out go the lights. The coil is a relatively inexpensive thing to try anyway. Give it a try, and see what happens.

Thanks Tom. I will pass that on to my dad today and see if he's tried that.
