First of all hello to everyone, i have looked at this forum for a few days and am impressed with all the information. I am new to the tractor scene so i dont know that much about them, my questions i have are, what kind of oil do i use in the motor, is the oil for the tranny and rearend different or are they combined and what kind of oil do i use for that. also i noticed i have some oil leaks around the head, could it just be that the head needs retorqued or something else? do i need to run leaded gas in it? i have heard people mention the blocks crack, is there anything i can do to prevent this? i think thats it for now, thanks in advance. chris

TO-35 Man answered most of your questions. Tranny and rear end are indeed combined. Use 90wt mineral oil, same as GL-1 in the stores. May be a little hard to find some places, but some Walmarts and tractor suppliers carry it (cheapest place), NAPA has it (about $24 for 5 gals), MF dealers have it. Don't use the common 80-90wt. GL-5 gear oil! It takes 6 gallons if you get it drained completely, which is unlikely, so don't overfill. Three drain holes, one fill hole. Drain small hole first. Reach inside large hole for gunk, as best you can. Usually takes several hours to drain well, perhaps overnight. As for engine oil, everyone has an opinion. I use straight 30 wt. and here in VA that works ok year round. If you are in very cold climate, that might not be good in winter. Manual says 20 wt. in winter. As 35 Man said, many use multiwt, and another popular multiwt is the Rotella 15-40.

Hi and welcome....Nice tractor you have you will enjoy it. AS for your questions First let me recommend you buy a shop manual it is invaulable.
There is no such thing as leaded gas anymore, doen't matter it well run fine on plain old cheap unleaded. As for the block cracking I recommend you fast flush your cooling system as per instructions on the can all brands work well. then depending on where you live you need the proper antifreeze mixture. In my opion varies depending on where you are...warmer climates 50/50 mix is ok...colder 70/30 antifreeze will work never add pure antifreeze always a mixture.
OIl...this to will vary depending on who you talk to or where your at and how you use your tractor. I live in the south and use castrol 20w50 it meets and exceeds all recomended specs.
You can try and retorque your head to stop some oil seepage, probably wont work if its really leaking...hope this helps you

Its not that uncommon for the head on Older tractors to leak espically after they have set up and not been used for awhile. I would say the most common leak is the intake /exhaust gasket on Contiential Engines and the air intake pipe. It won't hurt to try and retorque that head first, you loose nothing but a little labor...If it doesnt work replace it.

ok thanks alot, i havent made my mind up yet, i am thinking of getting a gasket set and replacing the head gasket and valve cover gasket just so i can see what the inside of the motor looks like and mabe clean the head up if it needs it. also on the rearend and tranny drain holes, are the three drain holes noticeable, i dont want there to be alot of lookalike holes and pulls the wrong one. thanks, again

From tranny back to differential there isn't anything else to drain, since it's all one reservoir. In other words, in that area, I don't think you can pull the wrong plug. Again, as I noted above, pull the small ones first. The large one will create a gusher. But when you get to the large one, reach inside for whatever gunk you can get out.
