MF 550 POWER STEERING PROBLEM

I have just purchased an MF 550 with power steering, or should I say without power steering. The wheels turn, in both directions, when off the ground but when the weight is on them it will only turn one way.

I have had both front rams reconditioned and tested to 800 PSI they appear to be working ok.

Also the steering wheel will turn and lock in the direction it workss but I can turn the steering wheel the other way forever.

It has been suggested that there is air in the system if so how do I bleed it?

Has anyone any idea what is wrong.

Now the steering won't turn either way when the wheels are on the floor.

Have a MF 550 with identical problem. Orbital valve has been reconditioned - checked pressure out of pump - about 1200 psi and going into one of the cylinders 600 psi. Have tried to bleed air without improvement. Would be interested to know if you have resolved your problem

Andrew

Check the hydraulic pump steering port output pressure. It is the small line on the hydraulic pump, should be about 1400 PSI and 4 gallon of flow. The pump has its own releif valve for the steering circuit. There is also a prioity valve for the steering circuit in the pump. The steering valve itself rarely fails, unless someone has assembled it wrong. The 550s prtor to serial #236304895 had another control valve in addition to the orbitrol valve these tend to get air in them. The best way to bleed them is to crack the lines between the orbitro valve and the control valve. Tou should also check the rear spindles for seizing and or a bad thrust washer.
