i think that you have that backward, there is a 744. unless i have the #'s backward. but any way they are an austaila massey harris 44, the diesel all had the perkins in them. massey at that time was the only us company to sell under there own name. they are a bit different from the us 44 but i could not tell you just how besides the engine as i have never seen one up close. i am sure that off the land can tell you more and corect me where i am wrong. he seems to be the most informed here.

The British built 744D was factory fitted with a Perkins P6-288 engine. perhaps that one had been fitted with a 354 at a later date

The 744 was the non-North-American 44,built in Europe, and who knows where? Vintage '48-'53, it was only offered in Diesel, using a 6 cylinder Perkins 288.The 745 replaced it,'54-'58 , using
a 4 cylinder Perkins 270. Only saw a 744 in the
French speaking territories, of Canada. Some may
have made it to the USA, with AG imports. Never saw one in Row Crop, in the states. Dropping a
354 Perkins, from a combine, into a 744 would pose
some conflict: the pan fitting the U-frame, bell
housing mounts, radiator size, engine RPM's. Of
course, I'm thinking of it still looking like a
MH tractor, not the freak-to-pull. Apologies. I
won't ask how it performed.

As far as I know the 744 was built in UK. The first few were built in Manchester, the rest in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Apparently most of the components were imported to UK apart from the P6 which was built at the Perkins factory in Peterborough England.

If anyone knows different please let me know!
