I have a 1971 MF 165 dsl which I purchesed from a friend. The tractor is in real good shape. When I first got it I never realy noticed a nocking noise when lifting with the 3 pt hitch. I recently purchased a Heavy duty Alamo 6ft Bush Hog to use behind my tractor. When I pick it up with the tractor I notice a knocking noise from under the seat/transmission. It doesn't effect the performance of the tractor. I am just concerned that I may be damaging something internal. I asked the orginal owner he said it had always done that and never had a problem with it. Any Ideas?????

Charlie, not to knock you (pun intentional), but to save a lot of folks puzzled looks and unnecessary aggravation. Obtain and read the manufacturer's OPERATING MANUAL for your tractor! The constant pumping position is clearly explained in the MF operating manual for every MF tractor that has the Ferguson system. Although farm tractors seem to be pretty simple and straightforwad machines, most folks who didn't grow up around them don't have any experience with hydraulic systems. As you read through the list of postings, you can tell which guys have tried to save twenty to thirty dollars by not buying the tractor operating manual. Yet they spent thousands to buy their tractor. The old English saying, "Penny wise, pound foolish." certainly applies. I maintain a MF35 and three other tractors for a friend who has a horse ranch. I bought the manuals for each one and it has saved hundreds of dollars by allowing me to repair things that he would have had to take the tractor in to the shop for. I was even able to rebuild an injector pump with the help of a $12 service manual. That alone saved over $400 in shop labor. Sorry about the soapbox. It's a pet peeve of mine that guys will spend thousands on a tractor and then post questions like: -Where do I put the oil in? -What kind of hyd. oil should I use? -What kind of tractor did I buy? -Why does my tractor do this? Look through the postings and you'll see these same questions almost daily. The proverbial wise man learns from the experiences of others. So, every wise man should; BUY THE MANUALS AND SAVE YOURSELF MONEY. Amen and GOOD LUCK with your MF. They're great machines. Jim

This is the best site for tractor guys imaginable. I got to this site because of my SuperH but I use a MF231S alot and I noticed the same thing you are discussing when I put my mower on. I read the responses and durn if I wasn't doing the same thing and I was about to take the rig in to have it fixed. No more knocking. Thanks for the great info.
I just wish I could find a site like this for the Jeep renegade I am wasting money on.

Just a guess and I might be way off base but since you indicated this appeared more after purchasing the bush hog, my guess is that you are using the position control to lower and raise your implement. If you raise that control lever too high your hydraulic pump goes into constant pumping mode for your remote type implements and this seems to cause a knock. If it only knocks when the implement is raised try moving the lever down just a fraction and see if the knocking subsides. If it does then you just moved the lever too high and the pump went into constant pumping. My 255 does this and when I don't wish to hear that knocking, I just move the position lever forward slightly (this doesn't lower the implement) and my knocking stops. Good luck.

I have '58 MF-65 that does the same thing. I figured out too that if you let the lever down a hair it stops or at the very least quiets down a bunch.
