THIS MAY SOUND STUPED BUT I HOPE NOT. I HAVE A MF36 4CYL GAS. I CHANGED THE OIL AND FILTER AND PUT EVERTHING BACK TO GETHER. I THEN READ A POSTING BY DEAN THAT SAID ABOUT 50% OF THE TRACTORS HAVE A SPRING MISSING IN THE OIL CANISTER AND THE FILTER DOES NOTHING. I AM IN THAT 50%. I HAVE REPLACED THE SPRING SO THE FILTER SHOULD WORK PROPERLY NOW. I AM JUST CONCERNED THAT THE PRIOR OWNER HAD BEEN USING THE TRACTOR IN THIS CONDITION FOR A LONG TIME AND THERE IS A LOT OF NASTY BUILD UP IN THE BLOCK. I JUST WANT TO TAKE THE BEST CARE OF THE TRACTOR THAT I CAN SO IT WILL LAST.

THE QUESTION IS. CAN YOU CLEAN ANY "GUNK" FROM INSIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK WITHOUT REMOVING OR TEARING DOWN THE ENGINE.

WHEN I CHECK MY OIL BEFORE I USE THE TRACTOR THE OIL HAS BEEN CLEAR. NOW I NOTICED THAT IT IS STILL CLEAR BUT THERE IS BLACK STREAKS IN THE CLEAN OIL.

THANKS FOR THE HELP

If you are truly concerned about this, remove the oil pan and valve cover (OHV) or access plate (L-head)and clean up all the parts with diesel or kerosene. That is where the goo will accumulate. It shouldn't be too hard to do. My MH 30 had about 2 inch thick layer of sludge in the pan, some of it hardened to the extent it looks like plastic. If your engine is anywhere near as bad it will take many dozens of oil changes to clean it up. And if it is not cleaned, there is always the risk that a chunk of sludge may break loose and block your oil pump pick up screen.
