I have an old Massey Harris twin power 101 Jr. with a two row cotton stripper on it. What does the twin power refer to? Also cannot seem to find the s/n does MF A1629 21902 have any significance? Thanks for the help.

David is correct about what the twin power feature meant and does. Funny thing is that I've seen original twinpowers (on the decal) without the feature. In front of the transmission housing on the right side is a little casting where the shift rails slide into. On a true twinpower, there is a little lever on a shaft that comes out of that housing. It is connected to a long rod that goes along the right side of the engine and ends at the governor where the shaft attatches to a steel cam setup that somehow allows the governor to bypass it's normal RPM limit. That linkage is only engaged when you shift the tractor into the B (belt) location on the shifting platform or into 4th gear for road speed. Never really did study it to see how or if it works, I took my linkage off because I found it tended to get in the way with carb removal, etc.

Mike- Do you think they used this transmission shift rail to governor linkage for the entire 101 Jr model years or sometime, maybe 1944 model change they did away with the linkage. I have seen the linkage and understand how it works but only on earlier tractore. I got my 1944 101 Jr from orginal owner and he doesn't think this linkage was on my tractor. David B

Good question, maybe they kept the name badge as twinpower even after the feature disappeared, or maybe some had it and others didn't. I know I've seen it on other MH models too, the twinpower label and no mechanism. I do know about in '43 or so, the 101 Juniors changed a lot of stuff when they went to 2 sidecovers per side (with a different curve), louvered tin grille (instead of the wire mesh one), air cleaner location changed (moved from in front of the rad), no bend in the exhaust stack, etc. Maybe the twinpower feature was dumped then. The name sure did sound impressive though. Do you have a 101 Junior?

Yes I have a 1944 #500053 101 Jr. I bought from my neighbor who was orginal owner and restored it. When I was a boy I used to pull the hay rope with a flat head 44-6 massey when they were putting up hay. The reason this was the favorite tractor was it was so quiet you could here them inside the barn holler when to trip the fork and get the tractor stopped . The rope was always on the sunny side of the barn, at least the tractor never stepped on your feet.

Do you have a photo of your tractor that you could email to me? I have removed the "hide" on my name link (above) but in case that doesn't work then use: mballash@wci.ab.ca

Where abouts are you located ?

The Twin Power refers to the two differnt throttle ranges, made to operate a set rpm for field work and then operate it at a higher rpm for belt work and on the road. If you look at the throttle it has a small raised portion at the bottom of the quadrant for the higher rpm's. The serial number is on top of transmission case just to the rear of pto shift lever.

I found the s/n 501122 should be a 1944? It does have the twin power throttle feature, along with aircleaner intake out the top of hood midway from front to back. Thanks for all the comments and help.
