Looked at a pretty rough looking 35 with 3 cyl diesel.Starts right up when cold and seems to run real smooth, but hard to tell about engine noise with the muffler gone. I know next to nothing about diesel engines. Oil preasure is 35-40 when cold. Is this good for this engine?
The tach doesn't work. I'm under the impression that this engine uses a mechanical tach that runs off the generator. Is this correct? If this tractor now has an alternator is the tachometer a lost cause?
Most importantly, if I now have a Ford 640, do you think that a woman(wife) would know the difference between a grey, red bellied tractor and a red, silver bellied tractor as long as I kept one or the other hid?

Oil pressure sounds OK...Just a little low maybe filters need changing or pressure gauge is a little off...If oil pressure comes up quickly when engine first cranks it is probably OK...

My MF 35 with 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel had a tach that didn't work..I replaced the cable that runs from the tach to the end of the cam shaft above and behind the oil bath air cleaner on the right side...Tach works great now...I don't think you can keep it hiden from your wife though...I couldn't she thinks red tractors are Farmalls but she sees the bills when I buy parts...Thats how I got caught.

Hi again the tach is driven from the end of the cam shaft i have seen the square rounded off this part is replacable but its a case of heating cam shaft and cooling down the repalcable end and fitting I am assuming you are refering to a perkins engine of course

I think you can add a tach drive to an alternator but your alternator must have a tapped hole in the rear end of the shaft for the drive gear to thread into. Check with someone that carries TISCO parts.
