I am interested in a MF 35, mainly for mowing. All other things being equal, is it best to avoid multipower. I presently use a 56 Ford 640, which I am happy with, so I don't feel like I need a million gears.

Just our experience, but we had a 65 multipower, and later, a 175, 2 165's, a 168, and an 1100, (all with multipower) and we never had a pennies worth of trouble with the system.
However we also had a IH 674 TA which was a real pain!

Multi power is a useful thing to have in certain circumstances. It simply gives you a half gear extra option in each gear. Great for those times when ground speed & pto speed dont quite match. The downside is that in "low" position, you have no engine braking and must therefore rely totally on brakes. The only other problem is when the multi power gives up the ghost, its costly to repair. You can block the multi power out if it breaks down, however, you still need to split the tractor to do this.

Can you elaborate on how to "block" the multipower?
