I have a MF65 that won't hold the throttle in position. When you pull the throttle lever down then let it go, the lever returns partway up and the engine speed slows down to around 1,200 RPM.

I can't figure out what's supposed to hold the thing in position. Can anyone help me out with this?

I just fixed my Father-in-laws 65 that had the same problem, but it wasn't the friction discs. There are two small ears on the shaft which engage with the two slots in the friction clutch. There was some wear in the shaft which caused the lever to move down and disengage the lever from the friction clutch. The fix was to put a small hose clamp around the shaft at the lower locating bushing and pull up on the shaft to re-engage it in the friction disc. I then tightened the hose clamp so it cannot let the shaft drop down through the disc again. Take the lower dash cover off to get easy access to the parts. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I can see the friction discs on my MF35, but can't on the 65. Wasn't sure where to look for the things.

If you set-up is like my MF50, and I think it is, there is a cork washer (disk) that is most likely gone. The cork washer provides friction necessary to hold the throttle. I had the same problem with my 50, replaced the disk and it held like a new one. The cost was a few bucks.

Under your dash there should be two little friction discs where your throttle handle pivots tighten them up.
