I have a 1963 MF 65 with a two stage clutch. When I have the lift arms up and I push in the clutch 1/2 way, where I can shift gears , the arms stay up but when I push the clutch in all the way the arms drop completely down. Is this how it was designed to work or do I have hydraulic pump problems.

I have a MF85 with 3 point hitch and the 2 stage PTO clutch setup. I had all kinds of "interesting things" happen when I added a front end loader and tied into the auxiliary factory mount hydraulic controls. Hydraulics on auxiliary are integrated into 3 point hitch hydraulics. You have to set the lift controls in just the right spot to keep the 3 point hitch from working while using the front end loader on auxiliary. I would check your operating manual for the 3 point hitch settings and ensure that is okay before taking the wrenches to it. Unfortunately that early series of MF tractors did not get attention due to the politics between the Ferguson engineers and Massey engineers(I hestitate to call them engineers, as they acted more like kids!) during development of the tractors, to be user friendly. They did not create even a hydraulic flow schematic so you could troubleshoot. Cheers

When you push your clutch in half way, the hydraulic pump, which is driven off the pto clutch, continues to pump - therefore your lift stays up. When you push your clutch all the way down, you disengage the pto clutch and thus shut off the hydraulic pump. Your lift should stay up and over a long period of time leak down, not go down immediately. As to the fix, I'm no expert on this, so take my advice with a big grain of salt (and please others correct me). You may have leaky pump seals or wore lift piston rings.

These are all things you can fix yourself with a little study.
