I just removed the canister oil filter from my MF135 for the first time. I found a metal filter inside (Napa Gold 1010). However, the replacement filter I bought from MF is paper. Please let me know if paper replacement filters are okay to use. (I'm wondering if it was sold to me in error.) Also, was the metal filter designed to be cleaned and replaced? Thanks for your assistance.

Was it really a metal filter or maybe did it just appear to be metal (with an outside metal or metal-looking cover)? Some of those are paper inside the outer layer.

It could have a paper filter within the metal casing, but it's hard to tell. I should also mention that this is a Continental gas engine. I'm starting to think the paper replacement filter is for the Perkins instead.

You have the right filter. Depending on the manufaturer, their can be either a thin metel outer shell on it with holes, an expanded metal type shell, or no shell, just plain paper. My 165 has the same type filter , and most I buy are just paper, nothing else. Don't be worried. A metal filter probably really wouldn't filter as much out as a paper one, if you think about it. Just wondering on this, but do you have the spring that goes on over the bolt before the filter, or is it missing? If it's missing, you're gonna want to get a new one pronto. Donovan from Wisconsin
