My uncle has a 35 Ferguson and he is wanting to go to a bigger tractor. He found a 165 Massey Ferguson and it needs painting but runs like a top for 3500.00.Is that a fair price, and what years did they make 165's,and how much horsepower did they have. Thanks much Jack(TN).

The MF 165 is an excellent tractor, especially with the Perkins diesel. (The gas model has a reputation for using a lot of fuel under heavy load)

The Perkins starts easy, runs smooth, sips fuel, and is conservatively rated so it will work at full HP all day long.

Figure 55 HP (Diesel) as a good round number... I think that various years went from 54 to 57. But whatever number it is, they are a strong puller.
I don't have my model year book here, but I think they were made from about 62 to 75 or somewhere in that range. If you post the SN of the tractor I (or someone else) can look it up for you.

If the mechanicals are in good shape (multi-power, brakes, transmission, PTO, 3-Point Lift etc.) I think 3500 is a good price.

Other thoughts...

How many hours on the engine ? Depending on care,
at about 6000+ hours you'll be starting to think about an in-frame refresh.

For about $25 you can get an oil sample
analyzed that will give you info about what
might be going on inside.

I have been using a '72 165 for about 4 years now. It does everything asked & never fails to start. Power is rated at 52. The short wheel base allows me to get in tight places I don't think a larger machine will go as easily. I too know very little about various brands, but The price was right for the HP & other features important to me.Never exp. buyers remose, at least not yet.
