I know there has to be some Ford truck mechanics on here. We have an 1988 Ford Bronco that I need some help with the fuel system. It is fuel injected & I know nothing about them but it acts like it need to be choked when you try to start it below 40 degrees above 40 it will crank right up. After you get it started the first time it does good till it set about 6 to 8 hours.

Without knowing what motor you have in your Bronco, if it is a FI engine, then there should be a COLD START VALVE that is activated by the temp sensor/cooling sensor, these two items on FI engines take the place of the choke in the carb on older vehicles with gasoline engines. Of course, both the sensor and the cold start valve are regulated through the computer. I just had a simular problem with one of my cars and by replacing the cold start valve it corrected the problem (I had replaced the temp sensor a year earlier). I'm not saying that this is the same problem you have on your Bronco but it is food for thought.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I had a temp sensor go bad on a 86 bronco 2 when I was on vacation . I used a piece of jumper wire for 6 months or so. locate your sensor up front either on the water outlet or on the front of the intake. do not ground it to the engine. jumper the two pins and look to see if the temp gauge goes up. If it does it is the wrong sensor .goto the other one. I cant remember if it is open to run or jumpered to run. anyway you can figger that out. It only has to run for a second or two with the rich mixture ,long enough to go from the drivers seat and change the wire,it'll run bad till you switch the wire. Then you'll be ready to go. I put 10,000 miles or more like this. If you want to get fancy get a toggle switch and two long wires and do it all from inside the cab.. Remember ,DO NOT GROUND ANYTHING TO THE ENGINE! the computer would'nt like that . That computer cost me nearly $400. If you have trouble figgering out which sensor email me and I'll scan that page from the manual for you.

That cold starting (or NOT!)after sitting sounds like my 91 Golf diesel!!!!!

It starts great, coasting down a hill!

My problem's more serious than yours, though - Dean - after about 350,000 miles, a major engine rebuild is now underway.

It's nice to see all the constructive help, coming your way for a change!

Keep smiling,
Jack

If it's a full sized Bronco try www.ford-trucks.com If it's the Ranger size Bronco II try www.therangerstation.com Is there a "Check engine" light? They can be read with a reader or a VOM and a jumper wire explained in most Haynes repair books. Hope this helps. Thanks for your MF knowledge on this board!

Faulty Ford; Something is hosed in the overall
fuel injection system, one of my neighbors had
a problem similar to your symptoms. That little
Ford Ranger sat in the mechanics yard for at least 6 months. The old timer didn't want to spend
much on its repair. In the end it was dragged up about 3.5 feet onto a platform truck and I am pretty sure its on its way to Japan.
Now everyone who was once involved in its maintenance is sleeping good once again.
Good luck in your repair efforts.

Hi Big Dean

There is a temperature sensor usually called
cooling sensor. It tells to electronics to inject
more gas when engine is cold and starts and tells to electronics to reduce fuel quantity when engine is warming up and so on normal temperature.

Unfortunately I do'nt remember which engines were
used in Bronco's but the sensor usually looks
like temperature gauge sensor. Nor I do'nt remember if injected gas quantity is greater when the sensor resistance is high or low. Anyway when engine is cold you can try by disconnecting the wire at the sensor to give high resistance or short it to the block it will probably start
on one of the two conditions. If it works the sensor is defective. Sometimes there is corrosion
in the electronic controller plug it can be disconnected and you can put WD-40 inside the plug and connectors around.

Good luck Dean

Thanks Joe I have suspected it was a sensor from the start just did not know where to start looking for it or exactly how it worked this will give me a place to start.

Hi

There is a sensor for the temp gauge in the dash
there is another connected to the electronic
injection system both are related to coolant temperature. As I mentionned in previous message
I do'nt remember where they are located on the engine.

Good Luck

It's me again !

You may verify that the ground strap body to engine is clean bright and tight it may affects
electronics and fuel pump performance if corroded
or rotted.

Bye

that was the first thing we did we have also chesk to see if we had fuel geting to the engine seams to be plenty of fuel & pressure have not put a gauge on it to check the fuel pressure but once it starts it run fine & will start right back when you shut it off and restart it.

Well then with it being fuel injected you will probably have to have it put on a test machine I'd say you have something in the injecttion system not working right. Or if your cheap put on an engine heater in the coolant system and it will start just like it does when its warmer out. Sorry I can't help you much more. None of my repair books for ford has the injecttion system in them. But its probably a bad sincer in the system.
