Could someone educate me on Perkins diesel engines? I have newly acquired a very rough MF 35, serial #SNM238526, with Perkins diesel. What is the difference between the A3-152 and AD3-152 engines and when were they used?
When looking for parts, there seems to be a change in the A3-152 between serial # 307657 and # 307658, but I'm unsure what this number is. Is this a casting number on the block, and if so, where would I find it. There seems to be another change in the engine serial # 1935854 or later, but again, I don't know what this number is. How many of these engines were made?
I'm just trying to figure out what engine I have.

Perkins 3.152 is not so much an engine as a range of engines. 3 means it is 3 cylinder and 152 is capacity in cubic inches. Engines designated "A3" are the agricultural variant made for MF tractors. There were also industrial versions used in other applications like air compressors, pumps, boats etc. These are usually "D3". It was a very widely used engine. A3.152 is indirect injected version recognisable by injectors being at 90 degrees to cylinder head. It is about 35-37hp and was used in MF35. AD3.152 is a direct injected version and was fitted in MF35X and MF135 (and possibly MF 240?) It is about 45hp. I don't think it was used in MF35 but someone else may know better. The 3.152 series has had several modifications over the years and there are variations in compression ratio and power output. e.g. D3.152 direct injected industrial version has a higher compression than ag version. Some of the parts are interchangable between engine types but many aren't. I think number will be engine serial number which will be stamped on it somewhere. Best bet is to get the engine number and ask a Perkins agent to identify it.

If my memory serves me correctly, the A3-152 is a indirect injected and the AD3-152 is direct injected diesel. There are differeces in the engine design between the 2 types. Again if I am thinking correctly. The A3 has precombustion chambers where the AD3 has a conventional typical cylinder head with no chamber and dished pistons. The later is a much more quiet engine and more efficient. It is easy to tell what you have by looking at the position of the injectors on the cyl. head. If they go in at a angle, it is a AD3 or if they lay on their side, It is a A3.
