My pony starter will not engage in cold weather. When it gets warm it works.I put a new bendix on it four years ago and its not used enough to have worn it much. I was told its oil on the bedix so I cleaned it and put it back together. Still does it.

A tip from an old mechanic. If you remove the starter clean the gear drive and shaft then try lubricating it with spray graphite. You can get graphite at farm supply stores. In cold weather after you use the tractor shut it off. Then immediately engage the starter with the ignition switch turned off. Next time you need the tractor the starter will be engaged into the ring gear. This will work. Good luck, Ken

Alan, put some light oil on the bendex, and work it back and forth, check for burrs on the threads.
