thanks dean ,i took the air filteroil cup off to change oil and ran it and it was no better.how do you check the preheater fuel supply. there is a valve of some sort comeing out of tank to the preheater but i can't see any adjustment on it. my book does no even show it. when i turn the key to preheat i can her a pop as the fuel vaporizes (it always starts i guess this is a +)

Take the pipe off the preheater and put your finger over the end to stop fuel coming out.

If no better try 'cracking' each injector pipe union in turn, the engine should die as you see fuel bubbling out, if it does not on any one cylinder then there is the problem. If you've got fuel under pressure it's probably an injector, otherwise look at the pump.

One other thought, my breather hose (probably the original) was collapsing after running for a few minutes. Once I replaced it, the problem went away. C. T.

The first thing I would check to see if there was a restriction in the air intake system by removing the hose from the intake manifold to see if the black smoke will clear up & make it run better. If your tractor has the manifold preheater in the intake check it to see if the valve on the preheater is stuck open & running raw fuel in to the manifold. Those are the two most common things I have found causing this problem
