Restoring a Massey 20 & presently replacing the rear axle seals. Found that the axle has a grove worn approx 2-3 thosands deep and approx one eighths or bit wider.
Will the new seal leak with the groove left as is?
I don't think there is room for a sleeve as the additional width may interefere with the spline for the brake disk.
Also when I re assemble should I lube the spline for the sliding brake disk or leave it dry??
One final question should I remove the outer axle bearing cover & clean out the old grease etc, bearing seems tight so would re greasing be adequate??
Note front wheel bearings were removed, cleaned, as they very dirty. Do the rear bearings tend to stay cleaner ??

Thks for the info. The original seal was a National 50085, the local auto parts substituded with a CR19969 spring loaded lip neoprene seal which is about half the width and appears to be a different type of seal. I"m hoping that the new seal will now contact a new area of the shaft. Another option is to double seal with grease added between the two. Two new seals on each axle is still cheaper than buying one sleeve ??? Merry Christmas Everyone

Bill.....I have done thise excat reapir two ways....Firt and most recommended is install a speedy sleeve (the speedy sleeve is the correct width and you wont have any problems) over the axle to repair the groove.
Second method is shade tree but works....repair groove with jb weld and let it cure. then hand sand it to orignal size ( this may take some time) then just reinstall a new seal. I did this repair for my neighbor on his 20 -5 years ago and no leaks today....personally i'd use the speedy sleeve. As for the bearing...remove it clean and inspect it good and repack it and reinstall if everything checks out it will last forever....and yes the rear do tend to stay cleaner, clean the splines really good and lightly lube them for an easy install.
Hope the helps you...

best wishes
