200 300 Series MF Tractor Questions

From time to time I see a 300 series MF tractor. Today I saw a used MF 362 tractor. My question (and observation) is - what happened to the 300 series tractors? Were they lemons? I ask because MF seemed to go back to the 200 series (prior to the newest 400 series being sold today).

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Bill

The 300 series was probably the best tractor ever built by MF. Built in Coventry it was launched in 88? alongside the lemon 3000 series from France. Like the 200, 500, 600, 4200 and 4300 series they were developments of the proven DX (Detroit Experimental) driveline and although in production for a long time it is fair to say that there were no real faults left by the time they finished in 1997, but it was a bit 'old hat' hence the introduction of the 4200. There were some 200 series which were badged as 300 series as a marketing tool in certain markets, ie 375E is a 275, 390E is a 290.

Thomas, you seem to know your MFs. I hope you may be able to help me. My father recently passed away and left my mother a Massey Harris tractor. We know nothing about it. It's plate reads:
Massey Harris
American Bosch Co
PSB4A-80C-2919A1 600/1350 7B20029/260F-270 Can you tell me anything about this tractor or do you know someone who can? Thank you for your help.

Sorry, I don't know much about Massey Harris at all, I'm a Coventry Massey man. Maybe someone else on this site can help?

Thanks for the info! I have never heard of Massey's drivetrain referred to as DX (Detroit Experimental). Can you elibrate a bit on that or point me to some text that does?

Thanks again,
Bill

I don't know whether there is any published text on the subject in full. I have always understood that it dates back to the battle of the Ferguson LTX (large tractor experimental). At the same time MF Detroit were developing the TE20 type driveline to the MF35, the DX. Some of this is covered in a book 'The Legendary LTX Tractor' by Erik Fredriksen who was with MF for many years. To cut a long story short the American management of the time weren't going to have a British designed tractor so put politics and short term gain in front of the long term benefit of the company. Rather resonant of AGCO...
If you look at the back end on any DX MF from the 35 to the 4300 you see a commonality of castings and layout, with a main top shaft handling drive gears and a drop gear and lower shaft driving through the hydraulic pump to the PTO. In the factory the 200 series castings were always refered to as DX parts, the 4200/4300 series were DXE (Detroit Experimental Extra, so called as it was to be a 'stop gap' product between the end of the 300 series and a new 'CX4' project which was to be a new chassis based design which never even got on to the drawing board..) The 300 series was known as CX (no prizes for guessing Coventry Experimental). The DX driveline is still in production in Brazil and by MF licencees around the world. I don't know where it would be possible to find out more, especially now that the factory is gone.

The 300 series are not lemons, they replaced the 200 series in the U.K. in about 1988,the 3000 series replaced the 600 & 2000 series a few months before that. When I visited the banner lane plant in the mid 90's the 200 series were still being built for some markets.(but not U.K.)300 series replaced by the 4200 series in about 1997/8.
