MF Tractor Differences?

I was having a look-see at tractortips.com at the specs for the MF35, 135, 235, 245 and 240. I was comparing them to the latest incarnations of the Massey Ferguson 231S and the 451 and it appears that for the most part, all of these tractors are right similar. Sliding gear transmissions and 3 cylinder Perkins engines. Hp varies slightly, as does weight. I have often wondered why there were soooo many versions of basically the same tractor. My guess is it had more to do with marketing a new model vs substantial changes in the design of the machine.

Having said that, I can't figure why the MF245 sells for such a high price vs some of the others. Is it that much different? A new 231S is about $14K in my neck of the woods and a 245 with 7000 hours is about $6-7K and I have not really seen any 240's for sale.

What is your take on this?

Thanks!
Bill

The 235 had some power steering issues that were resolved with the 245. I heard somewhere that the 245 had a slightly beefier frontend than the 135 and the 245's had the direct injection Perkins that starts in any weather.

Depends also on the many options available for the 245.

They seem to be tough tractors here in KY. Still, $6-7000 for that high of hours sounds high to me. We bought a new one in 1978 with an MF 82 3 bottom plow(for another tractor) for $8K. Where are you located?

All the MF245s seem to have power steering and the promise of a little more h/power. They are basicaly the same tractors, and usualy sell according to their general condition. A 135 in top shape can bring more than a later model 245 in a pitiful condition. alvinnms
