MF 65 PTO and Trans Clutch won't work

I plowed about 1.5 acres before the snow flew last month. At the time I noticed the PTO lever wouldn't work w/ the clutch depressed and engine running - gears ground. I garaged the 1964 MF 65 dieselmatic for a week. Was going to pull the kid's sled around the yard a week later (after the snow), but the clutch wouldn't work. I could grind it into first/low, but depressing the clutch pedal wouldn't stop the tractor. I had to use the fuel-kill switch. I was able to ramp up the fun by dropping the tranny into third just as I started up the engine, but still, the clutch won't disengage. With the engine off, I can go through the gears, and high/low lever will move in both directions.

My question: by not adjusting the clutch for the original PTO problem, and then putting a heavy load (two-bottom plow) on, could I damage the clutch beyond adjustability? I plan to try adjusting the 3 bolts through the bottom plate next weekend. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for ideas. I've searched this forum at length, found similar problems, but not both together.

Could be a slight red herring but are you sure that there's no oil leak from engine rear / transmission front. Have had clutches 'lock up' because they are soaked in oil.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Big Dean shared a little insight offline which I'll check into this weekend, too. (Thanks Dean!)

Here's what Big Dean said:

Hi Barry My guess is that one of the release finger pins either broke or fell out. I have seen this happen several times. I am thinking your probably fell out when the pto clutch would not release the pin was not completely out & when you shut it off it fell completely out. this is not real uncommon on those type clutches. I have worked the pin back in place through the hole in the bottom of the bellhousing & spot welded the pin on each end to keep it from falling
out again. Other wise you will have to split the tractor to replace that pin.

I took off the inspection plate...out fell the pin. Thanks again Big Dean! The finger and spring must still be up there somewhere. Now we're having fun!!

Agree with James. and make sure you get a real MF Repair Manual. While you are at it get a Parts Manual, and Operator Manual if you don't have one. The Repair Manual will guide you step by step and the Parts Manual will give you the ultimate exploded views for reassembly of everything, plus give you part numbers for your repairs. Don't waste money on IT or other off brand manuals, get MF manuals.

You have two separate clutch discs inside there one is for your PTO and the other for your transmission. By adjusting the three screws I think you are probably putting off the inevitable because there are adjustments inside the clutch and flywheel assembly that you set when you put it together. Since both clutches are acting up I would say it is time to split it and replace whatever damage was already done just be thankful you got the land plowed before it happened. There are very specific procedures to replacing a two stage clutch if you would like I could share them with you but you are better off to get a good shop manuel and sit down and thourghly familiarize yourself with it. I learned the hardway about the wrong way to do it and it cost me 250 dollars for a new pressure plate while you have the tractor split go ahead an do the pilot bearing and the throwout bearing

unrelated... but..... I have a MF 2135 with a dual clutch assembly. The pressure plate is broke and threw a chunk through the housing. The governer rod was loose (cotter pin lost on outside). Someone "borrowed" it, so I dont know specifics. I am assuming the rod came loose, the engine raced until it broke apart. Can anyone give me any other scenario or clarification as to what could have gone wrong? Thanks

If you are new to this forum address your question to Big Dean. He is a most knowledgeable, helpful, and all around nice guy.
