My friend is in the final stages of rebuilding his 1927 Wallis 20-30.
Now re-installing the water pump & we can not see what prevents the impeller from touching the impeller housing when the packing is tightened or perhaps overtighted?
Will the reverse pressure of the water pumping hold the impeller tight against the packing and away from the cast housing ?? We have our doubts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
OF course orginal manuals do not cover these details.
Any reference sites available

I just rebuilt mine and made a new cover,in the center of the cover is a threaded hole with a bolt and a lock nut.You have to take up the clearance wit the bolt and lock the nut.
hope this helps Wayne

Hey! another Wallis collector. I don't know the solution to your problem but there is a Grant Weir that has pictures on MSN. If you can find his email. I used to have it but can't locate it right now. If I do I'll post it. He's a Wallis man and a machinist. I have a J - western special with 4 wheels and fenders. about a 1917.

Allan, Thanks for the contact & we will try to locate Grant.
Would you happen to recall the MSN web site where the tractor pictures are located.
Where are you located in Saskatchewan ?
Your tractor sounds very interesting, I am not familar with the model.
Have you posted a picture of your tractor on this web site by chance ?
I Emailed Joe Poncelet who had a 20 -30 picture posted on this site, who was very helpfull. We however are now more curious than ever. as it appears if perhaps some parts (spring) may have rusted away on these water pumps. Will post it when we have more info Thanks again

Most water pump shafts have either a bearing type spacer, or a ridge on the shaft to retain the position between two bearing bushings.

If that is not there, the shaft is going to wander, and eventually the impeller will hit the casting or the block.

On something that old, I am not absolutely sure.
