A 1944 would be one of the later series. Originally, the grille was a cheap looking mesh affair with the air cleaner mounted behind the grille (on the front of the radiator support frame). These didn't have a stack through the hood, just drawing their air in near the top of the air cleaner itself. The sidecovers were a single one on each side. About '43 or so, some things changed which included the air cleaner position. It was relocated to the rear side of the engine opposite the carburetor side. The air intake tube snaked it's way over the top of the engine from the carb to the air cleaner. They also went to a new sculptured curve for the sidecover and added an additional cover (which tied in) under the gas tank tinwork shroud. The grille became louvered tin at this time.
