I have read in some of the archives that the MF285 and MF1085 used a Perkins 318 cu in, 4 cylinder diesel engine. From what I read, I gather this was a pretty good engine.

My question is - what other tractors used this engine and is it still in production today, in one variation or another.

The more I read about the 285, the more I think I would like to have had one!

The 1080 and 698 also used versions of the 318.

Bill, I don`t know if the 318 is still in use in other applactions today, but I can tell you it is a very good engine. I have a 285 ( 75model )with something over 12000 hours that I still use every day. Feeding big bales winter time. Mowing planting spring time. At one time it was my only tractor. The only complaint I have with front end loader it hard on clutch.

I can tell you from a mechanics standpoint that the A4.318 was a very rugged engine. Although they had some head gasket problems in the past and balancer problems which Massey has taken care of, "MF owns Perkins Diesel Engines" they are a reliable and trouble free work horse. I wouldn't be afraid to purchase a tractor with one of these powerplants.

I recently learned that MF sold the Perkins engine unit to Caterpillar a couple of years ago or so.

I had not heard that. That is interesting although with AGCO involved i am not surprised. Mf also owned Rolls Royce diesel if I remember correctly. I know that CAT had some machines made that used Perkins engines exclusively a few years ago. Can't remember what these machines were. I was working for a MF dealer at the time.

Massey Ferguson at one time owned Perkins Engines. The president was called Victor A Rice and he changed the main company to VARITY (the last three letters are rumoured to be his wife's initials) to limit the company's association with agricultural machinery. Within VARITY were companies including Massey Ferguson, Perkins and Lucas. AGCO bought only Massey Ferguson, following VARITY's refusal of a British management buyout. The other companies were sold off including Perkins to Catapillar, MF Industrial was a management buyout and later sold to Case IH, and Lucas I'm not to sure about, I think the wiring was sold to Leoni and the brakes went as Meritor, although you do still see Lucas brake parts for sale. I don't know what happened to VARITY itself.

Man! Time flys when you are having fun! Its been 8 years since I have been in the business. Lost track since I left. Massey has been thru a lot of changes. I remember when MF split off the combine division and it became Massey Combine Corp. And I remember something about Varity. Wasn't it Varity plow works long ago? As far as Cat goes, they are good too and Perkins has a good parent company if Cat leaves it alone!

Agco purchased MF in 1994 and Perkins remained as a part of Varity Corporation.
