I was given a mf-135 that has a 236 loader with it. The pump for the pto was bad so I replaced it with a new one of equal displacement. The company that I bought the pump from looked at the old pump and said that the filter for the hyd fluid was on the wrong side. They said that it should be located on the return side to the tank. It was on the suction side where the fluid is pulled from the tank by the pump. Can some one post a diagram of how the pump should be hooked up. It is driven off a shaft out of the front of the motor.

I think what he was asking was, does the loader have a separate reservoir, or is it plumbed from the rear end up to the front? I recently put a loader back on our 165 which I plumbed from the rear end, through the pto cover plate for the suction. Ideally, you should filter it before it gets to the pup to help keep the pump in good condition, but normally this doesn't work. In my area it's because it's just too cold, oil doesn't suck good when its cold, then to add a filter it doesn't suck at all. I mounted the controls on the fender and put remotes to the back, runnning the loader of those. This way if I ever take the loader off, I can keep the hydraulic system. Makes the tractor even handier than before. Back to your question, I don't have a diagram, but what Thomas said about a strainer is all you need. Put that infront of the pump, and that will catch the BIG chunks, but won't disrupt the flow. Some time in the spring I have to add that on my 165, although I'm not too worried because it comes from the rear end. If anything gets the pump, it'll be metal chips from grinding gears.

Not sure about this particular setup but normally you would fit a Suction Strainer on the suction side and a return line filter on the tank return. The strainer will be a mesh, reasonably open as pump manufacturers want as little suction pressure as possible as it causes cavitation in the pump. A suction strainer is all the Ferguson pump has, so there's probably no need to fit a return line filter unless you want to. I assume that this pump just pumps the oil from the transaxle and does not have it's own pump?

Thomas,
The pump is a front mounted aux pump that is run off of a shaft coming out of the front of the motor.
