We are restoring a 44D. We have two heads and both are cracked. If I can't find a head. I will fix the one that should be on the tractor. One head is stamped HD260A-CWC, the port for water temp guage is on top of the head and the holes for the push rods are larger in dia. than the other head. The second head is stamped HD260A-601 and the water temp port is on the side of the head. Can anyone tell me which of these heads (if either) would be the correct head for a 1951 MH44 D.
The block is also cracked and all I have been able to find are cracked blocks. Any help there would be appreciated. Thanks Bryan

There's a 44D head on E-bay right now, around $500

You might be able to fix the cracked block. My dad bought a dead 1953 44 diesel from my uncle back in 1971. It had been sitting in a field for several years, and after he overhauled it, and got it running he found out the block was cracked. To fix it he drilled out, and put a long bolt through the oil gallery that runs from one side of the engine to the other and tightened it down to pull the block back together. He re-routed the oil that went through this oil gallery through a hose around the back of the engine. A little antifreeze still oozed into the crankcase, so he flushed it out and put a can of heavy duty metallic block sealer in it. It has never leaked since, and she has been running strong for over 30 years.
