What Gear Range Are You Plowing?

The weather is breaking dryer and warmer in my neck of the woods and I am getting ready to get out my MF50 (w/ 3 cyl perkins & 6 speed) and plow my garden. The moldboard plow I have has two plows and is, I think 14 inches.

My question is - what range and gear do you typically plow? My MF50 would be the same as (or close to) a MF35 and MF135 diesel in hp.

BTW, I am plowing a garden that has been worked before and expanding it into some unplowed sod.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Whatever your tractor is comfortable with. Too much black smoke, water temperature going high, revs dropping too much means you are in too high a gear. If you suspect hard stuff underneath (rocks, stumps) go slower so that you don't break something. It's logical.

I was plowing today on my MF 65 diesel w/ multipower. It's good for almost 50hp. I was going at 2nd, in low, w/ high on the multipower. But, I don't know what I'm doing...just learning. THe depth of the draft affects the speed at which to proceed. I have a 2 bottom plow. We have some lava rocks lurking beneath the surface. At 1 spot in particular I needed to remember to lift the plow up so as not to shear the bolts off (again).

The soil seemed perfect for plowing here today. It really looked rich and dark as it turned over. Smelled good, too. :)

3rd low or 1st high usually, depending on conditions.
