I have a MF 255 and there are certain things to look for, above and beyond the overall condition/maintenance/wear, when considering purchase. In assuming the tractor is a diesel, the AD4 203 is a great engine, but the A4 236 is stronger and has more torque. 1978 is just about the time MF switched to the 236. If the starter is on the left and the exhaust on the right, it's a 236. If they're opposite, it's a 203. An independent PTO can be engaged without using the clutch. It's a good thing, if it works properly. Check it out. Looking at the tractor's rear end, if you have a spacer with several notches in it between the axle housing and the center housing, it has wet brakes, which is another good thing. If the tractor has remote hydraulics, look for a large cast filter housing below the left axle. That's another good thing, as the tractor has an internal auxiliary hydraulic pump, which puts out an additional 10gpm, good enough for a fairly large loader. I don't know where you're located, but in the northwest, a good clean , well equipped MF 255 can be worth $6-$8K, without the loader. Good luck!

In recent days in Mississippi I have seen these tractors priced from 9,000 to 9,200 which might be high. I have a 1975 255 row crop with multi-power and no hydralics. I would not price it at $7,000 as it might sell and then I would have to replace. I purchased in 1976 and it has given great service. It does have new rear tires that are no more than 5 years old. In looking for a loader for this tractor I offered a man $8,500 for a clean 255 diesel row crop with a Bush Hog 2426 loader with QT bucket and pallet fork. He was asking $9,200 and declined. I have now purchased a new 2426 with bucket and pallet fork for $5,000 and am investing another $1,700 in the hydralics to increase the flow for the loader. I would think the tractor alone could go for anywhere between $5,000 to $7,000. You could likely give more if you knew the tractor and it was in great shape with relatively new tires. Since I have had mine for 28 years I think they are great tractors. That's my reason for adding hydralics and a quality loader.
Good luck,
