Recently purchaser MF 135. Clutch seems extremly hard to depress in order to change gears/engage PTO. Seller stated that was typical of a MF 135. Mechanic told me he thought wrong pressue plate had been installed (maybe pressure plate for a 175 was put in) when new clutch was installed approx. 12 yrs. ago. Does anyone have any advice on this problem.

Go to BARECO .com and visit the clutch page. They have the tractors listed for 6 , 9 ,and 12 springs.. The 135 uses 6 spring. Ray-s

well I did the same thing. Put a clutch in a 150 mf and you had to stand on the clutch pedal to depress it.Count the number of springs in the pressure plate. Mine had 12. A clutch for a 270 mf only has 9. I took a torch through the adjustment hole and heated and weakened one of the springs in each group of 4 making it so I could pry it out. Tried it with 9 springs and it was still too tough. Removed another one in each group til I only had 6 springs total; 2 in each group evenly spaced around the pressure plate. Wasnt the really easy pedal that came out in the begining but I wasnt comfortable with only leaving 3 spring like the factory clutch had. It made it useable but still the pedal was stiffer than the orignal. Much faster and easier than removing the clutch and replacing it. That was 2 summers ago and no trouble with slippage of any kind. It's used for discing the garden and pulling a 5' finishing mower. Hope this helps you. Good luck, David

My 135 is the same way. Do a lot of grading, moving back and forth....well...my legs shake after a day of that!

b.j., i think your mechanic maybe on the right track, i have encountered the same problem on 135s up to 178s. they have had the wrong pressure plate components fitted when the unit was reconditioned.they had light, medium and heavy duty components that were being mismatched and fitted by unaware persons. some were impossible to push pedal to the floor and would shear the tapered bolts that secured the throw/out bearing fork. i have also seen the wrong amount of springs or the wrong tension springs fitted, the genuine springs are colour coded to identify strength.hope this helps out, regards and have a nice day.
