Found my 165 but it's got problems

Just happened up on a 165 today and it was pretty close to what I've been looking for and within 15 miles of home. Sheetmetal was as good as you'll find now days and the whole tractor looked good and the engine ran fine with no smoke. It was at a place that sells about anything farm related and someone had it there on consignment. It had two flaws that I would consider major. Shifting the Multi-Power had no effect on the tractor and it must be in high because it did have engine braking. The second problem was that I could turn the pto shaft by hand while it was in gear. Can anybody speculate what it would cost to repair these two things at a dealer? They are asking $5800 for the tractor and I'd like to get an idea of what to offer, thanks.

Thanks for the answers. I will take your advice and lay off the tractor because I don't think there would be any need to try and get the price down enough to cover possible expenses.

Unless you could "steal" it....REALLY cheap, I'd look elsewhere. When ever considerijng buying something with problems, you always have to get a good enough deal to cover yourself in the worst possible scenario, because even if you get an estimate, -when you actually get the tractor, and the mechanic opens 'er up, you not only may find that the worst, most expensive option is what is wrong, but he'll probably discover other things that need fixing as well. The fact that the dealer doesn't think it worth his time/money to fix before selling, pretty much tells you that he KNOWS it's something quite major and expensive to fix. I only buy repairables if I can STEAL them, because they always cost more to fix than what you're expecting. For the kind of money that dealer's talking, there's no way you'd get it for a steal- and meanwhile, for what the dealer's asking, you could find one privately that doesn't need anything....and then some! Don't let the shiny sheetmetal fool ya- tractors are for working...not looking at. Very rarely can you have good looks AND dependability!

$5800 is at the high end for a 165 that is fully functional. Like the others have said, you are looking at big bucks to fix this one. I think some real serious negotiations are in order here.

Sounds like the price is too high for the shape it's in. If the tractor didn't speed up when you shifted into High multipower than your are in low and there isn't engine braking in Low multipower. If the PTO has a ground and engine speed PTO, you shouldn't be able to turn the shaft by hand in either position. If you can only turn it in the engine speed mode, than odds are the 2nd stage clutch is out of adjustment or shot, if this is the case than the 3 pt will not work either because they are driven off the same shaft from the engine. I wouldn't dought that your looking at $2000 to $3000 to fix it.

The engine didn't do anything when I shifted the MP. I could just shift it back and forth at will and you wouldn't have known it was connected to anything. It did brake going down hill because there was a hill where I drove it the first time. I used to work with an 1100, 180, and a 165 that all had MP so I know this one has some problem. I just drove it for a minute on my way to town with my wife and had intended to check it out when I returned later but as I said no one was there so all I was able to find was the pto problem. It did turn by hand in both ground and engine positions. It is a shame too because this tractor looks as good as any I've seen in some time and the engine sounds good.

There is a modification for the multipower than includes drilling and putting bolts in the multipower clutch assy, this would give you engine braking, but no multipower. This info you can find on Big Deans website. He was a mechanic for MF, since retired.

Firstly is it gas or diesel, was engine stopped when you turned the pto, if so this is normal as you need the engine running if it has ipto to energise the clutch pack,E.G., did the pto lever have two positions or three. two for ipto, three for 2 stage clutch mechanical , back with top of lever for engine speed, neutral in middle, ground speed right forward , the pto shaft will only turn in ground speed as the machine moves back or forwards. the pto should be able to be turned if its ipto and engine not running as theres no pressure to energise pto brake. M/P sounds like only adjustment as they are normally left in lo if they are leaking or playing up.have no idea what they are worth, maybe some one local can help. hope this helps more than confuse you.Cheers!!!!!

PTO lever has three positions, ground, neutral or off, and engine. I tried it on two other MF's 165 and 255 at another dealer and they would not turn when in gear. The one I was wanting to buy would turn in any position. No one was there the second time I stopped so I could not start it.

could have a broken pto shaft or coupling, does the hydraulics work? ,if not could have sheared rivets on pto plate drive hub. if M.P. is holding in high, you should be able to drive up an incline,e.g. up a gutter or up a block of wood or concrete, put foot on clutch and it should hold it from rolling back, if it free wheels back, the m.p. is not working, be it adjustment or m.p. pump or m.p. pack burnt out, BIG BUCKS> can you find out who the owner is?, maybe talk to him. if the m.p. does not release from incline, may be simple adjustment only, they only have problems when they wont shift to HIGH. cheers !!!

MF-165; Lots of good Aussie advice. Don't get all overheated on this tractor until you know you can do the repairs, or get an estimate from someone in the area to fix what you determine is not working. Sounds like the tractor is worth about 2240 in its current condition. Remember you can always afford to side step a big mistake. The key is someone to make the needed repairs and a fairly decent estimate before you commit to make this dealer richer.
If in a year or so it turns out to be a sour lemon you could have used the money committed to a different and better rig. Good luck.
