MF 165 double clutch???

I recently bought a MF 165 at an auction. I talked briefly to the owner and he told me it had a double or high/low clutch. He didn't know much about it either. There is a high/low lever to the left of the steering column. I assume that is it. What is the purpose of one? What should I leave it on during normal operation? Are these more expensive to replace if the clutch ever goes out?

Any help is appreciated!

If you are going to keep the tractor for farm use, then I suggest you purchase manuals before you put the tractor in operation. Get real MF manuals thru your MF dealer. Do not waste money on IT or other off brand manuals. Get all 3 of them. Operator Manual, Repair Manual, Parts Manual. After studying the manuals, change all fluids and filters - - engine, trans, diff, final planataries, hydrolics. Drain and flush radiator - inspect for any leaks - 50/50 mix of distilled water and high quality anitifreeze. Take off all battery cables (both ends), clean, replace, tighten. Have battery tested. Use engine cleaner and pressure washer the entire tractor. This, along with new upper and lower raditator, hoses, thermostat, and belts is what I done when I got my last used tractor along with several other things. When put in service after these steps, you save much time and expense, and avoid breakdowns when there is work to be done.

You are confusing 2 different features here. A double clutch or 2-stage clutch means the tractor has "live pto". You can stop the ground travel and shift gears without stopping the pto. The ho-lo lever on the dash is "Multi-Power". It is a 2 speed shift on the go, no clutch needed. Multi-Power can be expensive to repair, but really doesn't have any bearing on clutch repair.

But it does have a clutch pack to change up or down. i find it hard to believe that the old owner knew little about it, was he pleading ignorant or was he trying to hide something.

I have a 1967 Massey 3165 the industrial version of the 165. Ijust broke my double clutch and am repairing now. Double clutch or duel clutch has two clutch plates . One controls the pto and one the drive train. When you step halfway down on the clutch it stops the tractor and all the way down disengages the pto. Not too complicated.
